Good Bye Saint John!

After being in Saint John for a little while one thing we hadn't gotten around to was the "market breakfast". Normally we buy stuff on Saturday morning then go home to make breakfast, so on our very last morning in the city we decided it was about time to check it off our bucket list.

Market breakfast is pretty standard it turns out:
eggs, bacon, toast, hashbrowns!

We also said a teary good bye to the Balemans who run a produce and other yummy things stand in the market. Who knew that you could make such good friendships with the people you buy food from in just a year! When they are wonderful as the Baleman's it turns out it's pretty easy.

Good bye market, we'll miss you!

Arts in Saint John

Last night Greg and I went to the Saint John Theatre Company's presentation of The Rocky Horror Show at the Imperial Theatre - it was great!!

It was student night and tickets were $10 instead of the $40 for the other nights to encourage students to attend. So not only were the preformers entertaining but the crowd of costume'd teenagers was a sight as well. Bravo to those who dressed up!

It was the first time that either of us had been to the Imperial Theatre and it's by far the most intricate, ornate and beautiful theatre I've been in. I didn't bring my camera so here's an internet picture which doesn't really do it justice but will give you an idea:

Also, a friend from school was in the show and she was AWESOME - YAY for Joanna!!

Saint John's Second Market

After the first scheduled attempt was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene the Queen Square Market went ahead today with nothing but blue skies overhead.

The Telegraph Journal wrote an article with more info on the market way back on August 28 - read it here.

Greg and I were pretty pumped about the market, it's even closer than the regular market, which is saying something given that's only a 5 minute walk down the street. The Queen Square market was about more than just food, there were crafts, pottery, flowers, a guy talking about compost, and of course lots of fresh veggies - pretty standard. But the idea of the market being in a different part of town where people might not venture is pretty great for the city.

Here are a few things I saw:

Check out his beautiful guitar, and neat-o stands!

How the space was divided up and identified to vendors

Candles that look like food?

I'm not quite here yet, but SJ is growing on me

JAM!!!!

A few shots to help visualize the space if you're unfamiliar:

That's a statue of Samuel de Champlain
(or Sam de Cham as people call him here)

Wood powered oven for pizzas

My friend Andre got to hold the pizza flipper!!

I hope this market becomes more of a regular thing, maybe next summer? It was great to have it outside, but I have a feeling people might be hesitant to buy into it given the unpredictability of SJ's weather!

Saint John Snaps

Some days there are interesting things to take photos of in Saint John but they are not THAT awesome to deserve their own post. So here is a compilation of pictures that are interesting in their own way.

These are three faces that I didn't expect to see together, at least not on the side of a van! If you can't make them out it's Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani and Danny Williams. They are speaking at Harbour Station in October, and if you have $200 or $300 (depending on how close you'd like to be) you could be in the presence of this unlikely trio. Don't believe me about the price? Check out the event page, shocking!

Oddest find in Saint John, yet!

Saint John gets cruise ships. Word is they originate from New Jersey, stop in SJ and head to Halifax. Interesting cruise ship itinerary hey?

A pretty flower on Duke St.

There's a sticker to support the Gas Guru?? AMAZING!!!

Find the typos, oh my!

Canada Day Hike

Beautiful weather calls for hiking. Greg and I ventured to Rockwood Park to take in some trails.

More photos after the jump!

A Sunny Day In Saint John (GASP!)

Today is a cloudy day in Saint John, so I decided to post these photos I took on Tuesday to remind myself that it's not always cloudy and damp!

Walking up Germain St.

Plants AND old books for sale - yes please!

Backstreet Records (one of Stuart McLean's favorite record
stores), a scooter and a gallery, more please!

Greg and I are hoping to take in some of the free festivities that SJ offers for Canada Day. Tonight there are free shows on the boardwalk - Bedouin Sound Class and Hey Ocean are playing as well as a number of other bands.

We have also been told about a massive flea market that takes over King St. and Charlotte St. that goes down on Canada Day morning. Since all of the stores are closed people will need a place to spend their money I suppose.

I will no doubt take pictures and report back on these celebratory shenanigans!
